Immerse yourself in the creative world of decorative weaving with the boutonné technique!
This 4-hour workshop will teach you how to create unique textures and striking raised effects – perfect for enhancing your textile projects. Whether you’re curious to discover this traditional technique or wish to incorporate it into your contemporary creations, you’ll leave with concrete skills and inspiring ideas.

A Practical and Immersive Workshop

Under the warm and expert guidance of Monique Ratelle, you will learn how to prepare your loom for this technique, select and handle different yarns to achieve varied effects, and seamlessly integrate boutonné into your woven pieces.
Through clear demonstrations and personalized support, you’ll be able to progress at your own pace and ask questions throughout the session.

Techniques You Will Learn

  • Preparing a table loom (shaft or rigid heddle) for boutonné
  • Choosing suitable warp and weft yarns (bouclé yarns, 4/8, or larger, etc.)
  • Making and securing even boutonné knots
  • Playing with color and texture for optimal visual effects
  • Integrating boutonné into decorative or functional projects

Workshop Details

  • Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Location: Tisse et File, 571 boul. Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Mercier (Montréal area)
  • Participants: Small group for personalized guidance
  • Prerequisite: Previous weaving experience (shaft or rigid heddle loom)
  • Language: French (translation available upon request)

Materials to Bring

  • Table loom (shaft or rigid heddle) already warped with:
  • 2/8 cotton, natural or white, 24 ends per inch, 8" wide, 2 yards long
  • Weft yarns: 2/8 cotton (same as warp) and bouclé cotton, 4/8, or any thicker yarn in the color of your choice
  • Nuts or fishing sinkers as weights
