Learn the ancient craft of tablet weaving and create your own decorative bands. This in-person course in Mercier, Montreal area, will guide you step-by-step through warping, threading the cards, weaving, and even designing your own patterns.

Discover the Art of Tablet Weaving

Tablet weaving is a centuries-old technique for creating strong, ornamental bands ideal for both decorative and functional uses.
This course, suitable for motivated beginners as well as those with weaving experience, will teach you how to prepare and weave a band using tablets (cards) on an inkle loom or with a belt setup.

You will learn how to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of tablet weaving.
  • Warp and prepare the loom (up to 3 yards).
  • Thread the tablets correctly.
  • Weave using a pattern.
  • Create your own designs and understand the specifics of reading and executing tablet weaving patterns.

Course Details

  • Duration: 5.5 to 6 hours
  • Schedule: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
  • Location: Tisse et File, 571 boul. Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Mercier (Montreal area)
  • Level: Some weaving experience recommended, but not required
  • Participants: Maximum 8

Included in the Course

  • Loan of an inkle loom and shuttle (on request)

Please Bring

  • Something to take notes
  • 2/8 “sturdy” yarn (orlec, mercerized cotton, cotton, polyester…) – 2 to 6 colors (approx. 300 yards depending on warp length)
  • Scissors
  • Cords to tie the warp (can be knit tubes or other utilitarian cords)
  • 25 four-hole cards
  • Inkle loom or belt (loan available on request)
  • 2 or 3 C-clamps
  • Flat shuttle with one angled edge (loan available on request)
  • Pencil and colored pencils
  • Indoor shoes
  • Lunch (or enjoy nearby restaurants)

Your Instructor: Françoise Trépanier

A passionate weaver for many years, Françoise Trépanier began her weaving journey thanks to her aunt by marriage, Marie-Reine. An active member of the Lasalle Weavers’ Guild and the Association des tisserands du Québec, she has completed extensive training, including with the Association des Tisserands d’Ici (ATI).
She teaches a variety of techniques—from the Backstrap loom to the inkle loom and tablet weaving—and has given multiple conferences on these methods. Her clear, structured teaching style helps students make rapid progress.
