Weft Ikat Weaving Workshop | In-Person | Tisse and File

Discover and master the fascinating technique of weft ikat in this in-depth weaving workshop led by Monique Ratelle. Designed for weavers who already have basic experience, this class explores both the historical roots and contemporary applications of ikat in weft.

Through demonstrations, guided practice, and technical discussions, participants will learn how to create distinctive patterns using resist-tying techniques, manage yarn tension accurately, and integrate weft ikat into their own weaving projects with confidence and precision.

This workshop emphasizes understanding the process—not just completing a sample—so you leave with solid technical skills you can apply independently.

Workshop goals

During this workshop, you will learn to:

• Understand the fundamentals and historical background of weft ikat
• Explore traditional and contemporary uses of ikat
• Master various resist-tying techniques to create specific patterns
• Understand the tools required for weft ikat weaving
• Weave ikat patterns while controlling yarn tension and motif alignment

Prerequisites

• Completion of a beginner weaving course
• Basic familiarity with loom operation

• Saturday, January 31 — 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Required materials

Participants must bring:

• A four-shaft loom or rigid heddle loom
• Loom already warped at 20 ends per inch
• Warp width: 8 inches
• Minimum warp length: 2 meters
• Warp and weft: white 2/8 cotton
• 10-dent reed or two 10-dent rigid heddles
• Shuttle
• Scissors
• Paper and pencil for notes

Instructor — Monique Ratelle

A passionate weaver, Monique Ratelle blends tradition and modernity in textiles known for their refined textures and colors. Inspired by both Québec and international textile practices, she enjoys sharing her expertise and adapting traditional techniques for contemporary handweaving.
