The EEW Yarn Counter is a precise and versatile electronic yarn counter designed to measure and track yarn length for a wide range of tasks — from dividing yarn for socks, quilts or 2-ply projects to monitoring yarn usage and assisting with sectional warping for weavers.

Designed by Dreaming Robots, it is a reliable tool for spinners and weavers who need accurate measurements in a compact, workshop-friendly device.

Detailed description

The EEW Yarn Counter measures yarn length accurately in yards or metres, up to extremely long distances. It is ideal for dividing yarn into equal lengths, preparing yarn for plying, estimating remaining yardage on cones or bobbins and supporting sectional warping setups on looms.

The system uses a low-friction rotating disk combined with an electronic sensor that counts disk rotations to calculate total yarn length. An optional WPI (wraps per inch) adjustment compensates for yarn thickness and improves accuracy, especially with finer yarns.

Compact, lightweight and durable, the EEW Yarn Counter integrates easily into spinning and weaving setups, whether mounted temporarily or used as part of a fixed workflow.

Key features

  • Accurately measures yarn length to track usage and reduce waste
  • Optional yarn weight input for increased measurement accuracy
  • Measures in yards or metres
  • Over 1 year of battery life
(requires 2 AA batteries, not included)
  • Versatile clamp design adapts to a wide variety of workspaces and setups
  • Audible alert beeps when a target yarn length is reached
  • Low-friction measuring disk works well with cobweb to bulky yarns
  • One-button reset for a fast, efficient workflow

Product specifications

  • Weight: 0.7 lb
  • Dimensions: 6 in (W) × 6 in (H) × 3 in (D)
  • Units of measure: Yards or metres
  • Maximum measurable length:
    • 99,999.9 yards or metres
    • Approximately 56 miles or 100 km

Common uses

  • Dividing yarn evenly for socks, garments or matched projects
  • Preparing yarn for plying (2-ply and beyond)
  • Tracking yarn consumption
  • Assisting with sectional warping on weaving looms
  • Measuring remaining yarn on cones or bobbins

WPI (wraps per inch) setting

The EEW Yarn Counter calculates length using the known circumference of the measuring disk. Because the yarn slightly increases the effective disk diameter (by roughly half the yarn thickness), the WPI setting allows the device to compensate and improve accuracy.

  • Default setting: 80 WPI
  • With thicker yarns, readings will be slightly shorter than actual length (about 6% shorter with an 8 WPI yarn)
  • The setting can be left at default if precise adjustment is not required

You can also improve accuracy by adjusting the yarn guides to keep the yarn closer to the centre of the disk and by increasing the distance between the yarn source, the counter and the destination.

Troubleshooting and usage tips

Inaccurate measurement

  • Increase the number of wraps around the disk (up to five wraps for very fine yarns over 80 WPI).
  • Ensure the yarn fully wraps the disk and does not slip.

Yarn fluff on the sensor

  • Pull the disk outward to remove it.
  • Clean the black sensor underneath with a brush or compressed air.

Jerky yarn motion

  • Increase the distance between the counter and both the yarn source and destination.
  • Adding extra pegs or rings helps smooth yarn feeding.

Very fine yarns

  • Lightly roughen the disk surface with fine sandpaper or a blade to improve grip.

Thick yarn getting stuck

  • If yarn wedges between the wire guide and the case, rotate the wire guide so it points straight up.

Counting direction

The counter always counts upward, regardless of yarn direction. Reverse counting is not available, keeping the device simpler and more affordable.

Button issues

If one or more buttons stop responding:

  • Open the unit as you would for a battery change
  • Gently remove the keypad ribbon cable
  • Reseat it securely in its connector
