What does a warp coil do?
On Mirrix looms, the Warp Coil determines the spacing of the warp threads.
The spaces between the turns of the coil are called dents. The number of dents per inch determines the sett of the coil. A 12-dent coil, for example, has 12 spaces per inch.
Being able to change warp coils makes Mirrix looms particularly versatile. You can adapt the warp spacing to your warp yarn, weft yarn or beads rather than being limited to a single fixed sett.
Available setts
Mirrix currently offers warp coils in the following setts:
- 4 dents per inch;
- 5 dents per inch;
- 8 dents per inch;
- 10 dents per inch;
- 12 dents per inch;
- 14 dents per inch;
- 16 dents per inch;
- 18 dents per inch;
- 20 dents per inch;
- 22 dents per inch.
Please note: not every sett is available for every loom size. Always select both your loom size and the desired sett.
One coil, more than one sett
You do not have to use every dent in the coil. By placing your warp in every other dent, you can achieve a sett that is half the stated density.

This flexibility allows you to achieve a wide range of setts with only a few different warp coils.
How to choose a warp coil for tapestry weaving
For tapestry weaving, your choice depends on the combination of warp yarn size, weft yarn size and desired sett.
In general, finer weft yarns require a closer warp sett and therefore a coil with more dents per inch. Heavier weft yarns generally work with a more open sett.
You can also use every other dent in a coil to create a more open sett without purchasing an additional coil.
How to choose a warp coil for bead weaving
Mirrix recommends threading the beads you plan to use onto a needle, measuring one inch of beads and counting them. Subtract one from that number to determine the approximate warp coil sett.
Mirrix provides the following recommendations:
- 8/0 cylinder beads: 8-dent coil;
- 10/0 cylinder beads: 12-dent coil;
- 11/0 cylinder beads: 18-dent coil for narrow pieces;
- 11/0 cylinder beads, wider pieces: 16-dent coil;
- 15/0 cylinder beads: 22-dent coil;
- 6/0 seed beads: 12-dent coil using every other dent;
- 8/0 seed beads: 10- or 12-dent coil depending on the warp thread;
- 11/0 seed beads: 14-dent coil;
- 15/0 seed beads: 22-dent coil.
These recommendations are a starting point. Actual bead dimensions may vary slightly by manufacturer and finish, and the thickness of the warp thread can also affect your choice.
Compatibility
Warp coils are available in different lengths to fit different Mirrix loom sizes. You therefore need to select both the loom size and the desired sett.
4- and 5-dent coils are available only for 12", 16", 19", 22", 28", 32" and 38" Mirrix looms.
For the 5" Mini Mirrix, only 14-, 16-, 18-, 20- and 22-dent coils are available.
With a shedding device
Mirrix looms equipped with a shedding device normally include four warp coils: 8, 12, 14 and 18 dent.
Additional setts can be purchased separately to adapt your loom to specific projects.
With a bottom spring
A Mirrix warp coil can also be installed at the bottom of the loom when it is equipped with a Bottom Spring Kit.
In this configuration, use the same coil sett at the top and bottom to maintain consistent warp spacing at both ends of the weaving area.

Do you primarily weave tapestry?
The 8-, 12- and 14-dent coils already cover a useful range of setts, especially since you can use every other dent when you need a more open warp.
Do you weave beads?
Choose your coil according to the actual size of your beads. The 14-, 16- and 18-dent coils are particularly useful for 11/0 beads, while the 22-dent coil accommodates very small 15/0 beads.
Are you adding a bottom spring?
Choose two identical coils if you do not already own the sett you need: one for the top and one for the bottom of the loom.
